Dear 7Pass users,

7Pass is now ready for translation at Transifex, the excellent translation service.

In order to contribute translation for 7Pass:

Sign up for a free account at Transifex. Please note that you won’t have to pay anything for this, it’s absolutely free.
Access 7Pass project page on Transifex and contribute. I’ve set the permission so that anyone can contribute.

I’ve current set the languages to English an German only. If you’d want to contribute for another language, please contact me using the Feedback form. Please note that only languages listed in below link are supported in Windows Phone (OS 7.1 column):

Auto translate button to have the text automatically translated by Bing so that you’ll only need to do minor edits.

7Pass 3.4 Beta sent

Hi Beta testers,

7Pass 3.4 Beta installation link has been sent to all subscribers of the Beta Program.

This beta features SkyDrive support with full synchronization capability.

This version, and probably next 7Pass release, will have some small issue:

Case: you made changes to your local database and synchronize it. Your database on SkyDrive doesn’t have not changed since last synchronization,
What will happen: your local database will be uploaded to your SkyDrive.
Restriction: SkyDrive limits file type of the uploaded file to certain support extensions only, which naturally doesn’t include kdbx.
Work-around: your database will first be uploaded with the extension of .doc, then renamed to the correct .kdbx extension.
Issue: You may sometime see a file with .doc extension (ex: Passwords.kdbx.doc) in case the synchronization fail. You can certainly delete it or it will be deleted next time your database is synchronized.

Update 24th December:

I was able to confirm that databases from SkyDrive cannot support .kdbx extension. SkyDrive not only not allow uploading of kdbx files, but all also disallow renaming of files to kdbx, which is the workaround I used. They even didn’t politely says that it’s restricted, just a simple rename success message with…. the old name. So, the “workaround” is to use .doc as the extension for your database, meaning you’ll have to use something like Passwords.doc instead of Passwords.kdbx. I know this is a huge blow to SkyDrive support, but it’s beyond my control.

7Pass 3.3 released

7Pass 3.3 is now available on MarketPlace globally, with these changes:

Fixed WebDAV bug.

Fixed global pass not displayed on app switch.

Added field editing and asterisks support.

Fixed protected field textbox display in light theme.

This is the same version as 7Pass 3.3 Beta 2. Thanks again to beta testers for trying out our beta. The beta version will soon be retired.

Plan for next 7Pass version:

SkyDrive support. I know, it supposed to be in this release, but my progress was not as expected, and partially because the Live Connect SDK that SkyDrive support depends on is not allowed to be used for production yet.
German localization, which is also supposed to be in 3.3. I’ll try my best to have this in next version.
Attachment view (text file and image). I’m not sure if I can support PDF and MS Office files. PDF will definately has an issue with security due to the Adobe PDF ready on WP7 will save the document in its cache, which can be seen again by launching Adobe PDF Viewer directly.

Update:

I can confirm that the 7Pass Trial/Paid version is being wrongly named 7Pass Free. I’m sorry about this mistake. Even though the name is incorrect, it will work just right. Unfortunately, an fix for this naming issue will take sometime as the AppHub is pretty slow to process submissions at the moment (understandable: it’s holiday time in the US).

Some statistics

7Pass has been using collecting usage data for sometime. However, only since 7Pass 3.2 that the data is really refined and became more meaningful.

Statistics from the month of October (certainly only from those chose to allow usage data collection):

7Pass is being started approximately 200 times a day globally.
There’re 40 new installations of 7Pass everyday.
Only less than 12% of the time a database is opened that user choose to save the password. This is interesting as I choose to save password all the time.
DropBox dominates the database source with 46%, WebDAV at 20%, followed closely by Web with 15%. The rest (19% ) is Demo database.
10% is the rate that user choose to use external browser instead of the built in browser.

7Pass 3.3 Beta 2 released

Hi Beta testers,

Sorry for screwing the first beta version. I’ll be honest that I have no clue which build I uploaded for the first beta. I learned a lesson from that, and now have proper build automation in place (I shouldn’t have thought 7Pass is too simple for build automation).

Anyway, changes included in this second beta:

Confirmed WebDAV bug is fixed.
Fixed global password challenge not displayed when user switching back to 7Pass.
Changes to database synchronization code to make it easier for SkyDrive support.
And certainly changes in the first beta.

If you’ve registered for the beta program, you should receive an email soon with link to install the beta 2 on your phone.

Please note:

If you register for the beta program now, while reading this post, you’re probably too late for the beta 2. However, you’ll be included in later betas.
You’ll have to use the email you’ve signed up for the beta as your Live ID in order to be able to see the beta 2 in MarketPlace.

Fields editing

A short demo of the upcoming fields view/edit feature.

Please don’t hesitate to voice your feedback in the comments of this post so that I can improve it further.

Update

The previous field editing UI is too troublesome. I tried to squeeze too many feature into the screen, which requires more taps for user to perform common tasks, and hides the most needed value at the same time.

I’ve came up with an alternative UI that is easier to use, with bars of the left to guide use of the pair of field name and value.

Beta program

My progress with SkyDrive integration is really good. I couldn’t imagine the Live Connect SDK Technical Preview is that easy to use.

Since the SDK is not ready for productive usage yet, I’ll only provide this version as a feature preview release, which normally comes as a .xap file.

This time, however, I’d want to make use of the MarketPlace beta program, which:

Allow users without an developer unlocked device to join, meaning any one of you can join to install it on your device. It’ll be absolutely free, separated from the stable 7Pass releases.
The beta doesn’t need to go through the normal certification progress, meaning no delay after I submit the beta.
You’ll certainly need to be on Mango as 7Pass now only supports Mango.
Please note that I don’t have a beta version ready yet, but if you subscribes, you’ll be notified when a beta is ready.

If you’re on Mango and would want to be on the bleeding edge (it’s sharp, so be careful with your database), or just simply want to use SkyDrive no matter what, please sign up here.

7Pass 3.2 is available in Marketplace

Update: Please note that this update is only available for Mango devices only, thus, you won’t see the 3.2 version in MarketPlace if you’re not on Mango.

7Pass 3.2 should be now available in all MarketPlaces, for both free and non-free version.

Aside from changes in the Beta version, I’ve added the support for protection settings for entry title and username. That means if you specify that title, username or password should be protected, it will be displayed with asterisks in 7Pass until you tap on it.

To change these settings in KeePass: Open your database, then go to menu File\Database Settings, then Protection tab.
Please note that username will still be displayed with entry name in Group details page, even if you specify that it should be protected.

URL and Notes protection doesn’t make sense for 7Pass yet, therefore, no support yet.

Next version of 7Pass is already in development:

Support for SkyDrive using Live Connect SDK. I’m not sure if Microsoft will allow productive usage of the SDK by the time next 7Pass is ready yet, but nevertheless, I’ll just get SkyDrive support to be ready so that we can support SkyDrive as soon as the SDK is ready for production.
A less contrast background image. I receive a lot of requests for using a little less intrusive color theme to make it easier for the user’s eye.
German translation, and possibly even more. My apology to nthobois for not make use of his translation for so long. I guess I’ll have to find some better way to make the translation easier for users to contribute.
Support for attachments. I’ve actually had this implemented, with a text and image viewer. It’s quite useful actually, but this feature causes 7Pass to takes longer and using more memory to load the database. I guess I’ll have to improve the caching and attachments parsing before this feature can be included.

Please also voice your request for new features/enhancement here in case I forgot it.

Changes since Beta 1:

Password is now displayed as asterisks when it’s not focused. Tapping on the password box will still show and select the password for copying to database or editing.
Display fields in 2 lines for more room for field value.
Easier Notes textbox scrolling.
Refresh group items only when necessaries.
Group notes are now displayed with group name. No modification support yet.
Display last modified time in Download pages (DropBox and WebDAV).
Promoted Box.net to a button in WebDAV login page.
